Major refurbishment and de-carbonisation of the Literary & Philosophical Society’s Grade 2* Listed building within the Central Conservation Area of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Lit & Phil is the UK’s largest independent library outside of London and is beginning its decarbonisation journey as part of a wider refurbishment to deliver modern events spaces and improved accessible staff and visitors’ facilities.

CDL were appointed to develop the RIBA Stage 1 – 3 MEP design particularly focussing on phased implementation of low carbon heating; the introduction of on-site renewable energy generation, and low energy lighting replacement.
